Album info

Some music seems to occupy a space. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s makes us aware that we are part of it.

Recorded at home as a series of musical sketches during his final years, 12 is among Sakamoto’s most intimate works. Piano, synthesizer, breath and the quiet atmosphere of the room coexist with remarkable tenderness. There is little separation between composition and environment; each sound seems to make the silence around it more perceptible.

For us, Sakamoto was a master of the invisible architecture of space. His music deepens our awareness of atmosphere—of distance, stillness, time, and our own presence within them. Listening to 12 can produce the peculiar sensation that the boundary between ourselves and our surroundings has softened: we are not simply in the space; for a moment, we are part of it.

Completed while Sakamoto was living with cancer and released only months before his death in 2023, 12 feels less like a final statement than an extraordinarily attentive act of being alive.
