Maintenance of Everything: Part One

A celebration of the things that endure.

In Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One, Stewart Brand turns his attention to an often-overlooked truth: creating something is only the beginning. The real work lies in caring for it.

Drawing from architecture, infrastructure, technology, ecology, and everyday life, Brand explores the quiet discipline of maintenance—the people, systems, and philosophies that keep our world functioning long after the excitement of invention has faded. Thoughtful, wide-ranging, and deeply optimistic, this first volume challenges our culture's obsession with the new, arguing instead for stewardship, longevity, and continual improvement.

A fascinating read for designers, makers, tinkerers, and anyone who believes that preserving something can be just as creative as building it.
