Recorded in 1986, this singular collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient composer Harold Budd surrounds Elizabeth Fraser’s ethereal voice with Budd’s improvisational piano, reverberating guitars, bass and sounds so transformed they seem to have lost their source. Beneath it all are long, deep currents of sound that carry the listener through the album like an undertow—somewhere between the recognizable and the otherworldly.
There is something deeply spiritual about the journey. At times, the music can summon an almost inexplicable sadness, but if you stay with it, that feeling seems to open rather than close—transforming into joy, compassion and a heightened sense of being alive.
Perhaps what we love most is the tension between the human and the unfamiliar: piano, voice, strings and breath dissolving into sounds that seem to come from somewhere else entirely. It feels both ancient and futuristic, melancholy and hopeful—a reminder that whatever comes next might still have a place for beauty.
