Ambient 1: Music for Airports has long been one of our favorite records, and a touchstone for the kind of music we feel most at home with. Eno composed it not simply to be listened to, but to coexist with a space—shifting our awareness of its scale, light, silence and passing time. It has the uncanny ability to reveal the invisible architecture of a room.
Originally released in 1978, Music for Airports gave a name and manifesto to ambient music: sound capable of rewarding attention without demanding it. Four slowly unfolding compositions of piano, voice and tape loops drift in and out of alignment, creating an environment that never seems quite the same twice.
