Why we love

Waltz for Debby

Some recordings capture music. Waltz for Debby captures a moment in time.

Recorded live at New York’s Village Vanguard in 1961, the album places us in a small basement jazz club alongside Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on double bass and Paul Motian on drums. Listen closely and the room remains remarkably present: conversations murmur between tables, glasses clink, and applause erupts only a few feet from the musicians. More than sixty years later, dropping the needle feels a little like stepping through a door into that room.

At the center is one of the great ensembles in jazz. Evans, LaFaro and Motian play less like soloist and accompaniment than three musicians engaged in an extraordinarily sensitive conversation—listening, responding and leaving space for one another. Their technical mastery is immense, yet nothing seems labored. The music simply unfolds.

This is what we love about Bill Evans. His playing can be intricate without calling attention to its complexity, gradually loosening the listener into a blissful state of attention and contentment. Waltz for Debby is both a document of three masters at a remarkable moment and a reminder that virtuosity, at its highest level, can feel effortless.

Bill Evans Trio

The Bill Evans Trio of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian transformed the traditional jazz trio into something closer to a three-way conversation. Rather than simply supporting the piano, each musician listened, responded and improvised with remarkable independence and sensitivity. Their brief time together produced some of the most celebrated recordings in jazz, culminating in their legendary 1961 performances at the Village Vanguard, just days before LaFaro’s untimely death.
