Kumiko Coaster Kit
The Kumiko Coaster Kit explores the intricate Japanese art of latticework called kumiko. This kit includes all the wooden pieces needed to create two coasters and comes in two different patterns, Asanoha and Uragoma.
Like most kumiko motifs, the Asanoha and Uragoma designs are inspired by nature. The Asanoha pattern represents the hemp plant, which symbolizes growth and vitality. The Uragoma pattern depicts the opening of a pod of sesame seeds, which was regarded to have high medicinal value when first introduced to Japan in the 6th century, symbolizing a healthy and long life.
The 1,400-year-old craft of kumiko involves the intricate assembly of small pieces of wood without the use of nails or glue to make delicate geometric patterns. The pieces are held together solely with the pressure that results from calculated and meticulous woodwork.
With the complimentary video tutorial, it should take around 5-10 minutes to assemble both coasters, or give it a try without the video for a fun puzzle.
